1. What is a Temporary Import Permit?

The Temporary Import Permit (TIP) is a customs document that allows foreign-registered vehicles to enter China for personal tourism use without paying full import duties or VAT. It is essentially a "temporary entry visa" for your car.

The permit is tied to your specific vehicle, your passport, and your planned entry/exit dates. When you leave China, the permit is cancelled and the vehicle must depart the country within the approved timeframe.

2. How long is it valid?

A Temporary Import Permit is valid for up to 6 months from the date of entry. You choose the duration when you apply — most travelers apply for 1–3 months depending on their itinerary.

You cannot extend a TIP inside China. If you need more time, you must exit and re-enter, or arrange an extension in advance through your agency.

Tip: Apply for a permit longer than your planned trip. It is cheaper than re-entering, and gives you flexibility if your trip gets extended.

4. How much does it cost?

The cost of a Temporary Import Permit varies depending on vehicle type, duration of stay, and which border you use. Typical costs include:

Using a professional travel agency is recommended — they handle all paperwork with customs authorities, which saves you hours of waiting at the border.

5. Can I apply for a TIP by myself?

Most travelers use a qualified travel agency (like us) to pre-arrange the permit before they arrive. This way, when you reach the border, everything is already approved — you just drive through.

6. Common mistakes to avoid

7. What happens if my permit expires?

If your TIP expires and you have not exited China, you are driving illegally. This can result in:

If your plans change, contact your agency immediately — they may be able to help you extend or adjust your permit before it expires.
