Ningxia is the smallest province on this northwest China circuit, but it packs desert, river and history into a compact loop. Starting from Yinchuan, this 5-day route heads south along the Yellow River to Shapotou, dips into the Tengger Desert fringe, and returns via the western end of the Ming Great Wall. Daily drives stay under 220 km, which makes it an easy addition before or after a Gansu crossing.

Roads & driving conditions
The main route uses the G6 and G2012 expressways plus the well-built G109 national road along the Yellow River. All are suitable for standard cars and motorhomes. Sand can drift across short sections of the desert roads around Shapotou after high winds, so slow down on the approach. Toll rates on the G6/G2012 are around RMB 0.4–0.5 per kilometre for a car.
Fuel & rest stops
Fuel is easy in Yinchuan and Zhongwei, with stations every 30–50 km on the main corridors. On the Yellow River scenic roads, fill up before leaving town. Desert sections between Shapotou and Zhongwei are short, so a full tank covers the whole loop comfortably. Keep cash as a backup for fuel if your payment app is not linked to a local card.
Vehicle & permit notes for foreign drivers
- Ningxia roads are popular with convoy tour groups, and police at the Great Wall and desert scenic areas may ask to see your vehicle documents — keep the full set in the cabin.
- Your temporary import permit (TIP) must be issued before entry; customs declaration and the deposit guarantee are arranged through the licensed travel agency you use at the border.
- The temporary Chinese driving permit for your foreign licence is issued together with the TIP. Do not drive before both are in hand.
- Shapotou's sand activities (cable crossing, sand surfing, rafting) run seasonally; check opening dates outside May–October.
Note: Foreign-registered vehicles enter China only through a customs declaration filed by a qualified travel agency — personal vehicles cannot clear customs on their own. Arrange your entry port and permit dates before planning the Ningxia loop.
Best season
April–June and September–October are the comfortable months. July–August is hot and dry, with daytime temperatures frequently above 35°C. Winter is cold but offers empty roads and the quietest views of the Yellow River.
Practical reminders
- Ningxia's lamb dishes are the regional speciality — try hand-pulled noodles in Yinchuan.
- Shuidonggou combines prehistoric sites, a ruined fortress and a small underground museum; half a day is enough.
- Bring sunglasses and a hat for the desert viewpoints; shade is limited.
