Qinghai Lake is the largest saltwater lake in China, sitting at 3,200 metres on the edge of the Tibetan Plateau. For foreign drivers it is one of the most rewarding loops in the northwest: a full circuit of the lake on smooth roads, a detour to the mirror-flat Chaka Salt Lake, and the Kumbum Monastery in Xining on the way out. This 7-day itinerary keeps every driving day short so you can acclimatise to the altitude without rushing.

Roads & altitude
Almost the whole loop uses the G6 Beijing鈥揕hasa Expressway plus a sealed ring road around the lake 鈥?no off-road driving is needed. The passes sit around 3,500 metres and the lake shore itself is above 3,000 metres, so plan for thinner air: drive shorter legs, drink water and watch for altitude headaches in the first two days. Tolls are modest on this route, roughly RMB 0.35鈥?.45 per kilometre for a car.
Fuel & rest stops
Service areas appear every 60鈥?0 km on the G6. Around the lake, fuel stations cluster at Heimahe, Bird Island town and the lake's eastern gate 鈥?fill up before leaving Xining and again at Heimahe before the west-shore section. Diesel and 92/95 RON petrol are standard; 98 RON is rare at plateau stations. Keep cash as a backup for fuel payment.
Vehicle & permit notes for foreign drivers
- Enter China only with a valid temporary import permit (TIP) arranged before arrival. Customs declaration and the guarantee deposit are handled by the licensed travel agency you use at the border 鈥?this is part of the entry process.
- Your temporary Chinese driving permit is required alongside the TIP; both are issued through the same entry procedure.
- Carry the full paperwork set in the cabin: passport, vehicle registration, customs documents and insurance certificate. Roadside checks on the G6 are routine.
- Chaka Salt Lake sells a large number of tickets but queues are long in July鈥揂ugust; arrive before 9 am if you want clear mirror reflections.
Note: A foreign-registered vehicle cannot enter China through personal customs clearance. The declaration must be filed by a qualified travel agency. Plan your entry port (Mohan, Horgos, Alashankou or others) and permit dates before committing to a Qinghai itinerary.
Best season
June鈥揝eptember is the classic window: the lake is ice-free, the grasslands are green and temperatures are mild during the day. July鈥揂ugust is busiest 鈥?book lakeside accommodation weeks ahead. From late October the plateau turns cold and sections of the ring road can see frost and wind, so winter drives need winter tyres and flexible dates.
Practical reminders
- Acclimatise in Xining (2,200 m) for at least one night before driving to the lake.
- Sun at 3,000 metres is strong 鈥?sunglasses and sunscreen are essential on the west shore.
- Lakeside hotels fill fast in high season; Heimahe is the practical base for the western leg.
