Northern Shaanxi is the loess highland of the northwest 鈥?terraced yellow earth, cave dwellings and the loudest waterfall in China. The loop from Xi'an runs north on the G65 expressway to Hukou, where the Yellow River narrows into a thunderous gorge, then west to Yan'an and back. It is a compact 5-day route with short driving days, ideal for foreign drivers arriving in Xi'an with a vehicle already cleared at a western entry port.

Roads & driving conditions
The G65 expressway covers nearly the whole route and is in good condition. The last stretch into Hukou is a sealed scenic road with hairpin bends down to the river level 鈥?go slow on the descent and park at the official lots. Rain can make the loess side roads slippery; the main loop is unaffected. Tolls are roughly RMB 0.4 per kilometre for a car.
Fuel & rest stops
Service areas line the G65 every 50鈥?0 km. Hukou town and Yan'an both have full fuel stations; fill up in Xi'an before the northern run and again at Yan'an before the return. 92/95 RON petrol and diesel are standard throughout.
Vehicle & permit notes for foreign drivers
- Enter China only with a valid temporary import permit (TIP) arranged before arrival. Customs declaration and the guarantee deposit are handled by the licensed travel agency you use at the border 鈥?this is part of the entry process.
- Your temporary Chinese driving permit is required alongside the TIP; both are issued through the same entry procedure.
- Carry the full paperwork set in the cabin: passport, vehicle registration, customs documents and insurance certificate.
- Hukou Waterfall has two viewing banks (Shaanxi and Shanxi sides); the Shaanxi side is the classic photo spot.
Note: A foreign-registered vehicle cannot enter China through personal customs clearance. The declaration must be filed by a qualified travel agency. Plan your entry port (Mohan, Horgos, Alashankou or others) and permit dates before committing to a Shaanxi itinerary.
Best season
April鈥揓une and September鈥揙ctober are comfortable and the river runs strong. July鈥揂ugust brings the flood season 鈥?the waterfall is at its most dramatic but the viewing platforms are crowded. Winter can be cold on the highlands, and icy patches appear on early-morning roads after snow.
Practical reminders
- The waterfall spray soaks the viewing deck 鈥?a waterproof jacket or poncho is worth carrying.
- Yan'an's cave-dwelling sites are spread around the hills; a full day is enough for the main ones.
- Book the Hukou hotel in advance in summer 鈥?the town is small and rooms go fast.
