Gannan (鐢樺崡) is the Tibetan fringe of the northwest: monastery towns, high grassland, limestone peaks and villages of stone towers squeezed into narrow valleys. Roads have improved fast in recent years and the loop from Lanzhou is now fully sealed. This 7-day itinerary follows the classic circuit 鈥?Xiahe, Diebu, Zhagana, Langmusi 鈥?with short driving days that suit both the altitude and the photography stops.

Roads & driving conditions
Most of the loop uses G213 plus sealed county roads; the Gannan sections are wide two-lane highways with good surfaces. The climb out of the Yellow River valley is twisty but paved, and summer rain can bring brief closures on minor roads 鈥?check the day's conditions at your hotel. Traffic is light outside of public holidays. The section around Zhagana is narrow in places; take it slowly and park at the designated lots.
Fuel & rest stops
Fuel is available in Lanzhou, Linxia, Hezuo, Xiahe and Diebu 鈥?top up at Xiahe before the mountain leg and again at Diebu before Zhagana. Service areas are thin on the Gannan county roads, so treat every town as a fuel point. 92/95 RON petrol and diesel are standard; expect slightly higher plateau prices.
Vehicle & permit notes for foreign drivers
- Enter China only with a valid temporary import permit (TIP) arranged before arrival. Customs declaration and the guarantee deposit are handled by the licensed travel agency you use at the border 鈥?this is part of the entry process.
- Your temporary Chinese driving permit is required alongside the TIP; both are issued through the same entry procedure.
- Carry the full paperwork set in the cabin: passport, vehicle registration, customs documents and insurance certificate.
- Zhagana now charges a scenic-area ticket at the village entrance; the walk into the valley is on foot paths, not vehicle roads.
Note: A foreign-registered vehicle cannot enter China through personal customs clearance. The declaration must be filed by a qualified travel agency. Plan your entry port (Mohan, Horgos, Alashankou or others) and permit dates before committing to a Gannan itinerary.
Best season
June鈥揝eptember is the green season: grassland at its best and the passes clear. July鈥揂ugust is peak tourist time and the main festival month 鈥?book rooms in Xiahe and Zhagana well ahead. May and October are quieter but cooler; nights above 3,000 metres are cold in any month.
Practical reminders
- Respect local customs around monasteries 鈥?keep noise down and ask before photographing monks.
- The altitude at Zhagana is around 3,000 metres; carry water and take the walking sections slowly.
- Breakfast in Lanzhou before the drive 鈥?the beef noodle shops open at 6 am.
